❗ Exception – Two Solutions to One Sudoku
Sudoku is traditionally designed to have one unique solution. However, in rare cases, a puzzle may allow more than one valid solution while still satisfying all Sudoku rules.
In the example shown, there are three specific sets of numbers that can be interchanged without breaking any of the following rules:
- No repeated numbers in any row
- No repeated numbers in any column
- No repeated numbers in any 3×3 grid
When these highlighted number sets are swapped within their allowed positions, the board still remains logically valid.
This means:
✔ Both arrangements satisfy Sudoku rules
✔ Both are mathematically correct
✔ Both are valid completions of the puzzle
However, a typical computer-based Sudoku checker verifies the solution against one predefined stored answer. If a player arrives at the alternative valid solution, the system may incorrectly mark it as wrong simply because it does not match the stored pattern.
